Breaking: Tim Russert and Saturn

Tim Russert, host of NBC's Meet the Press, died suddenly today of a heart attack. His colleagues on MSNBC are all in shock, saddened, and breaking down on the air. Tim had just turned 58 on May 7th -- his Saturn was in Virgo and his second Saturn Return had just begun. As with the sudden death of Health Ledger last winter -- we can't blame Saturn for his death. Uranus or Mars are usually implicated in sudden events like this, and Pluto is often involved when it comes to death. But we can look to Saturn for evidence of some longer-term illness or problem that was ignored or undiagnosed. With Saturn in Virgo in particular, mind/body balance and downtime are vital.

Russert was known to be a hard worker, someone that rarely stopped to rest, and who never went out on a Saturday night so that he could wake up at 4 am on Sunday to prepare for Meet the Press. He only missed two shows a year. Ironically he had just returned early from a trip to Italy with his family to prepare for the Father's Day episode of the show, which he had hosted since 1991. This is a very sad bit of breaking news to report. It will be hard to watch election returns this November without thinking of him gleefully jotting electoral votes on his wipe-off white-board until the wee hours. The man really seemed to love his work, something that is very important for Saturn in Virgo.

Just a thought for all of you born with your own Saturn in Virgo -- please don't feel alarmed that something bad is going to happen to you. Just make sure that you don't overwork yourself, or allow your perfectionist tendencies to make you sick. It's a wake up call to make health your first priority and to find time to relax.

Things to be Thankful For

If our dear readers will allow a holiday indulgence in the spirit of the feast, we'll admit a humdinger of a crush on Sam Talbot, current Top Chef contestant and former Lower East Side pushcart vendor. This Saturn-ruled specimen is a self-styled socialist, with a blog to match. How totally swoon-worthy. Socially-conscious hotness meets passionate man that cooks. For a LIVING. Had I known they made men this way anymore, I would have wasted less time.

Sam's 29th birthday is just a month or so away, and it appears as if he'll spend his Saturn Return in the spotlight. Will he win the title of Top Chef? I predict yes, but with his Saturn at 0 degrees of Virgo, the next two years should prove full of challenges around staying spiritually connected in the midst of overscheduling. He'll need to find time for himself. (I hope that doesn't interfere with cooking breakfast in bed for me.) For all you kids born between November of 1977 and September of 1980, you're up next for a Saturnian sojourn.

And while we're on the subject of things to be thankful for, the Democratic sweep of Congress takes the cake and the Tofurkey, too.

PS --

In the department of karmic coincidences, let it be noted that Sam and I were interviewed by Gothamist merely a year apart. Is this a match made in heaven, or what?

Women of the world donned their Manolos and raised their Cosmos high last Sunday night in honor of the fabulousness that was SATC. Devastated, I am, to see it go, but like the ladies, I understand that all good things must come to an end. Sarah Jessica Parker is one smart cookie -- she understands the meaning of time. (With her moon in Capricorn, the sign of Saturn, it's no wonder.) A sassy, kick-ass Aries chick, SJP brought the series to a close in exactly one cycle of Saturn. She knew instinctively that staying any longer at the party would wear the welcome thin.

Alas, I will miss my ladies. Appropriately, they left us longing for more during Saturn's transit through Cancer, calling the role of women in society to our attention in a BIG way.

It was repugnant, but mesmerizing, like a bad car accident.

I somehow found myself involved in last night's premiere of The Apprentice, Donald Trump's latest attention-whoring vehicle. As I watched him last night lording over his court of wannabe corporate kingpins, I felt like throwing up. And it was hard not to squint at the glare of all the guilded objects in his palatial apartment. Trump is a Leo, through and through. I find it fascinating that he is one of many millionaires with a sun-Uranus conjunction in his natal chart.

Here's the ironic part: I was accosted by one the contestants, Sam, over the summer. He tried to get me to sell lemonade for him as I walked by Joe's Pizza late one afternoon. I was annoyed at the time, but I secretly cheered last night when he didn't get fired.

I think he might even win...
